Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art from her aunt Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of broadcast journalism. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the trash from one of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
